After its two leading animation directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata went into retirement after their respective swan songs came out in 2013, the future of Studio Ghibli became more uncertain than before, and now it looks more possible that its great era is really being finished with “When Marnie Was There”, which is incidentally its 20th feature film. Watching Japanese animated feature film “When Marnie Was There” is a bittersweet experience because this may be the last work from Studio Ghibli, which has been in a ‘temporary’ hiatus period since “When Marnie Was There” was released in Japan in 2014 July.
